AFC Wrexham, the Welsh team purchased by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020 are generating headlines once again with the Red Dragons on track to secure a consecutive promotion as they continue to move through the English footballing pyramid system.

Since taking over the club, Wrexham have become a global phenomenon and much of this success has been boosted with two massively successful editions of the FX/Disney Plus documentary series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ with season three set to be released on 2 May.

Following the club’s promotion from non-league football which was the fourth tier National League in 2023, the Welsh side have once again performed solidly under coach Phil Parkinson this season and stand on the verge of securing another promotion to League 1 (third tier in the pyramid system and just two divisions away from the Premier League).

The club have three games outstanding in the current season and at present sit in second place in the league of 24 teams with the top three sides automatically securing promotion and teams finishing in fourth-seventh having to endure the lottery of a play-off system.

Wrexham just need two wins to guarantee League 1 football for the 2024-25 season and could even secure promotion this weekend should other results go their way.

Saturday’s round of matches will certainly deliver moments of tension and pulsating drama for the heavily invested (both financially and economically) Hollywood co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

Should Wrexham secure all three points against bottom team Forest Green Rovers at home, and MK Dons and Barrow fail to overcome Mansfield Town and Gillingham respectively the Red Dragons will savour the joy of back-to-back promotions in English football.

Securing a place in League 1 would mark the first time in Wrexham’s 159-year history that they club would have achieved successive promotions, and it’s been almost twenty years since the Red Dragons have played in the third tier of English football.
