George C. Scott, Trish Van Devere, and Melvyn Douglas, star in supernatural chiller ‘The Changeling’ - one of the scariest Martin Scorsese has seen.
‘The Changeling’ was released 45 years ago to great critical acclaim and remains to this day as a masterpiece in the horror/terror genre. For many, it is one of the most chilling movies ever made - both writer Stephen King and director Martin Scorsese consider ‘The Changeling’ as the scariest film they have seen.
Cult horror film terrifies viewers
The plot centers around John Russell (George C. Scott), who relocates to Seattle after a bizarre car accident which he escaped but claimed the lives of his wife and daughter. Russell, a composer, rents an old mansion which has stood vacant for several years.
Thinking he will get peace and privacy to overcome his grief and continue composing music, Russell soon discovers that he is not alone.
A seance conducted in the house reveals that it is haunted. John overhears the voice of Joseph Carmichael a crippled six-year-old boy who was murdered by his father in 1906. The more he investigates, the more danger he ends up putting himself in.
‘The Changeling’ has been terrifying audiences since it hit theaters in March, 1980 and has been available for many years on DVD and Blu-Ray. Stephen King said of it: “For supernatural horror, I like Peter Medak’s film The Changeling, starring George C. Scott in perhaps his last great screen role. There are no monsters bursting from chests; just a child’s ball bouncing down a flight of stairs was enough to scare the daylights out of me.”
Directors Martin Scorsese and Guillermo del Toro have also enthused about ‘The Changeling’ - Scorsese listing it in the top 10 of the scariest movies he has seen.
