Six more hits. That’s all that Miguel Cabrera needs to join an exclusive club. Two exclusive clubs, to be precise. With six hits, the legendary Detroit Tigers first baseman will equal Roberto Clemente’s mark and become only the 33rd player in MLB history to hit over 3000 career base hits. He will join a group of only seven players to accomplish both 500 home runs and 3,000 hits, joining Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Rafael Palmeiro, Albert Pujols, and Alex Rodriguez.

The young boy from Maracay, Venezuela, who took Major League baseball by storm in the new century, turns 39 on Monday. His legs may not be fresh anymore, but he still beat out a shallow sac-fly to left to score against Kansas City on Thursday. Full of swag, Miggy put on his Conor McGregor strut on the way back to the dugout. He went 3 for 4 on the night and if he can match that performance over the weekend, he will hit the 3000 milestone in time for his birthday.

“I’m lucky to see it,” Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop said. “I saw Adrian Beltre (get 3,000 hits in 2017). I gave him the ball. He got a double, and I gave him the ball. So I saw him, and now I’m going to do it again.”

Perhaps no longer the Triple Crown threat that he once was, he is still an important part of this Tigers lineup. And the pressure is not as great when you are chasing singles instead of home runs. “I’m just trying to focus on every at-bat, every pitch,” says Cabrera. “Just don’t try to put pressure on myself and go from there. Just go out and make something happen. I try to go out there and play my best baseball. I know there’s a lot of pressure. I know there’s a lot of eyes on me. But at the same time, I’m in a good position right now. I’m happy to be here. Hopefully we can win more games. I think that’s more important.”

Sounds like all the greats, doesn’t he? From Pete Rose to Wade Boggs, the focus is on putting the ball in play.

Career milestones and achievements

Reaching 500 home runs last season, his impressive list of achievements includes:

  • Two AL MVP awards
  • Four batting titles
  • 11 All-Star selections
  • 2012 Triple Crown
  • 7 Silver Slugger awards

He has a career .310 batting average and has always been a shining example of how the game should be played. And for that Miggy, you have given a legion of fans so many years of immense pleasure. Long may it continue.
