Update:

The Last Frontier is a land of great beauty and has many natural riches. However, the remoteness and harsh conditions of Alaska make the cost of living there quite high. To help compensate, the state cuts residents an annual check to bolster residents' household finances through the Permanent Fund dividend.

Residents voted to create the Alaska Permanent Fund after oil was discovered in the state. The idea was to ensure that the “non-renewable resource would provide benefits to current and future generations.”

$1,702 Permanent Fund dividend payments going out March 20

Every year, lawmakers set the amount that the state will disburse from the Alaska Permanent Fund. The dividend for 2024 plus a one-time energy rebate bonus was set at a combined $1,702 in September last year. That amount was a bit higher than had been expected due in part to a lower number of recipients.

Direct deposit payment began going out on 3 October. On March 20 the final group of recipients will see their payments showing up in bank accounts. These people’s applications were in “Eligible-Not Paid” status on March 12, 2025.

You can check your application status by selecting "myPFD“.

Applications now open for 2025 Permanent Fund dividend

Applications for the 2025 Permanent Fund dividend opened on Jan. 1 and resident will have until 11:59 pm on March 31, 2025 to submit theirs. You can do so on the State of Alaska Department of Revenue’s website for the Permanent Fund Dividend.

While Governor Mike Dunleavy has proposed paying each Alaskan $3,900 in his budget proposal for 2025, it is more likely to be around $1,400 once negotiations with the Legislature are finalized according to Alaska Public Media.

Who can apply for the 2025 Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend?

In order to qualify for the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend you must be a resident for the full calendar year. When applying, you must also have the intent to remain in Alaska indefinitely.

Furthermore, you cannot have “claimed residency in any other state or country or obtained a benefit as a result of a claim of residency in another state or country at any time since Dec. 31, 2023,” states the government website.

Anyone who was sentenced for a felony conviction in 2024 or incarcerated at anytime last year, be it for a felony or misdemeanor, is not eligible to apply for the APF dividend.

You must have been physically present in the state for at least 72 consecutive hours, and any absence of more than 180 days from Alaska must have been an allowable absence in order to be eligible to apply for the 2025 Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend.
