Every month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends benefits to a range of recipients, including retired workers and the surviving relatives of deceased Social Security beneficiaries (e.g. children, spouses and parents). The SSA also issues disability benefits to Americans eligible for the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) schemes.
As the SSA’s August payments continue, we provide the lowdown on who is in line to receive their money on Wednesday 9 August 2023.
Social Security payments on 9 August: who gets them?
According to the payment schedule established by the SSA, SSI benefits are generally sent on the first day of each month. However, if the first day of the month falls on a Saturday or Sunday, payment is brought forward to the last Friday of the previous month.
Meanwhile, on the third day of each month, the SSA sends money to beneficiaries who started receiving their payments before May 1997. If the third day of the month falls on a Saturday or Sunday, this payment is also brought forward.
All other Social Security cheques are sent out on a particular Wednesday, depending on beneficiaries’ date of birth:
Payments are sent via direct deposit to recipients who have shared their bank details with SSA. Otherwise, they are mailed out, which may take longer to arrive. If a payment date falls on a federal holiday, benefits are distributed the day before.
In line with the schedule outlined above, the SSA sent SSI cheques out on Monday 1 August, and on Wednesday 3 August issued payments to beneficiaries who began receiving money before May 1997. The remaining benefits will be paid out on the following dates:
Social Security: How much is sent each month?
In 2023, retirement benefits rose to an average of $1,827 a month, the SSA revealed in January. The maximum monthly payment for Americans who retired at 62 is $2,572, while those who retired at 67 get $3,627 at most. Beneficiaries who work until at least receive a maximum amount of $4,555 per month.
Average SSI payments are around $550 a month. The maximum monthly benefit is $914 for a single persona and $1,371 for a married couple if both are eligible for the scheme.
