2022 California MICHELIN Stars: how many starred restaurants are there in this state?

California boasts more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other state in the United States, and the number has gone up even more this year.

Update:
California boasts more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other state in the United States, and the number has gone up even more this year.

The Michelin Guide has just released its list of California restaurants which they have rated with stars, and there are 18 new restaurants that have joined the distinguished list.

Despite the large number of new additions, the total number of starred restaurants has only increased from 85 last year to 89 this year, as some places lost their ranking.

Michelin added Addison in San Diego to its highly exclusive list of three-star restaurants, which now totals seven. The restaurant, the first in Southern California to receive the honor, calls its type of food “California gastronomy”.

The guide gave two stars to a total of 12 restaurants, which is down from 14 last year. There was an increase in the number of single-star restaurants from 65 in 2021 to 70 in 2022.

California hosts the biggest number of Michelin-star restaurants among all US states, thanks to culinary destinations Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Michelin: Coveted and controversial

Initially conceived as a travel guide to help motorists plan their trips by providing useful information such as places to stay and where to eat, the Michelin ranking has become one of the most prestigious awards in the world of fine dining. The review process is cloaked in secrecy, with anonymous diners known as restaurant inspectors giving their assessment of the establishments.

Although Michelin stars are much-coveted, the award has had its share of controversy, including charges of bias and elitism, of pushing some restaurants out of business, and of putting chefs under extreme stress.
