Highlights of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival

Of all the worthy winners across the festival, few received the acclaim offered to Tom Cruise for his involvement in Top Gun: Maverick. The film itself received a five-minute standing applause after its first showing and Cruise himself was awarded a surprise Palme d’Or.

Before the film’s premiere, Cruise was the subject of a tribute reel showed in the theatre and French fighter jets flew overhead with blue, white and red smoke streaming.

“An incredible evening and an incredible time,” Cruise told those gathered, “Just to see everyone’s faces. It’s been 36 years since Top Gun and we had to hold this for two years because of the pandemic.”

Also in the headline from Cannes was Ruben Ostlund who won the Palme d-Or for Triangle of Sadness!, becoming only the ninth director to have won the Palme twice.

Directing brothers, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, were also honoured with a special prize to mark the 75th Cannes Film Festival.

Song Kang-ho won the award for best actor for his appearance in Broker. Kang-ho first came to international attention for his Oscar-winning work in Parasite.
