2022 Midterm Elections: How many US Senators are up for election in 2022?

The elections on November 8 will decide the makeup of Congress with every House seat up for grabs as well as one-third of Senate seats.

Midterm elections in a week are likely to be seen as a referendum on the last two years of the Joe Biden White House. With a struggling economy and low approval rates for the head honcho, Democrats are trying desperately to hold on to both areas of legislative power; the House and the Senate. Midterms are held every four years. Up for grabs are every House seat, as members serve two year terms, while only a selection of Senate seats are voted on. At the 2018 election 35 Senate seats were to be voted on though for 2022 this number is 34.

These senators make up Class 3, a class elected in 2016 for a six year term. Each election cycle a different class is voted upon in a staggered fashion. Some of these senators include the likes of Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Chuck Schumer and Ron Johnson, while one of the hotly contested seats is in Pennsylvania between Republican Mehmet Oz and Lt. Gov. John Fetterman.

The two candidates could hardly be more contrasting in their ideology, personality and political backgrounds. Fetterman, a 6ft 9in progressive with shaved head and tattooed arms, has close links to the state of Pennsylvania. Dr. Oz on the other hand rose to fame with a daytime television show with ran for 13 seasons. He was appointed to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition by President Donald Trump and has won the endorsement of the former President while running for the Senate.
