Every year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) recognises the best in the world of cinema from the past year at the Oscars. It is often the winners of Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress that make the biggest headlines, but there are many more prizes up for grabs in the annual ceremony.

There are 24 categories for the 2023 Oscars:

Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Editing, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Animated Feature Film, Best Animated Short, Best Live Action Short, Best Documentary Feature and Best Documentary Short.

In addition to the 24 awards that will be handed out at the Oscars ceremony, there are a number of other technical and scientific awards to recognise other achievements in the film industry.

However these awards are not necessarily awarded every year. For example, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award (producing), and the Gordon E. Sawyer Award (technological contributions) are only given out to exception examples of their respective crafts.

Which films were eligible to be nominated for the 2023 Oscars?

There is a lengthy set of eligibility rules for the Academy Awards which cover everything from the duration of the film to the picture quality used in production.

Here are the broad points of the Academy’s eligibility requirements for the 2023 Oscars:

- Theatrical run must have begun between 1 January and 31 December 2022
