2023 Academy Awards: What are the 10 shortlists announced by the Academy?

Award season is here, and on 24 January, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the nominations for the 95th Oscar Awards.

What are Oscar shortlists?

Hundreds of movies are nominated for Academy Awards each year, and to narrow down the best films, the Academy votes to create a shortlist from which the winners will be selected.

Last year, for example, there were fifteen documentaries nominated for Best Documentary Picture, but only five were selected as nominees.

Which shortlists have been released?

So far, the organization has released the shortlists for ten categories: Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound, and Visual Effects.

Similarly to the Best International Film, the Golden Globes could provide insights into which movies will likely make it to the nomination round of voting for both Original Score and Best Original Song. Earlier this month Babylon won the Golden Globe for Best Original Score, and RRR took home the award for Best Original Song. The other nominees have also been bolded.
