2023 Golden Globes odds and predictions: What movies and TV shows are the favorites to win?

From Abbott Elementary and The Crown to Everything Everywhere All at Once and Babylon, the 80th Golden Globe is sure to keep fans guessing with many great films and TV shows up for some of Hollywood’s most prestigious awards.

Predictions for the Golden Globes are harder than those movie and TV buffs make for the Primetime Emmys and the Academy Awards. Why? Because the Golden Globes, hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), happen first. Within the award-show circuit, it is the journalists and members of HFPA that are the first judges of the cinematic and televised works that are worthy of celebration.

Hollywood Foreign Press Association enacts changes to modernize and diversify

In recent years, movie and television fans have criticized both the HFPA and The Academy for lack of diversity, which many believed led the organizations to fall out of sink with a changing media environment.

These criticisms festered and last year led the HFPA to host a much smaller ceremony because of boycotts from actors, directors, and other important Hollywood figures. Investigative journalists uncovered patterns of harassment, bullying, and discrimination with the HFPA, as well as the fact that no Black journalists had been accepted as members of the organization since 2002. These findings only perpetuated a common question among the public: why should an increasingly diverse and global audience care what a group of white Hollywood-focused members of the press care about film and TV?

After the boycott and NBC’s universal to carry the awards live, the HFPA looked inward and has made changes to the governance structure of the organization to foster and support a more inclusive and diverse membership. Will these changes be reflected in the winning works? Only time will tell.

Which movies are favored to win at the 80th Golden Globes?

Unlike the Academy Awards, films are divided by genre, meaning that dramas go head to head, as do comedies.

Best Picture Categories

Best Picture - Drama

  • Avatar: Way of Water
  • Elvis
  • The Fabelmans
  • Tar
  • Top Gun: Maverick

Best Picture - Comedy

  • Babylon
  • The Banshees of Inisherin
  • Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
  • Triangle of Sadness

Of the five films nominated in this category, Tár received the highest reviews from the critics, scoring a 91 on IMDB’s Metacritic. The fan rating, however, is lower than that of both Avatar and Top Gun: Maverick but ties with The Fabelmans. Based on the response from critics, Tár seems like the clear favorite, but with strong performances by The Fablemans with critics, the winner is a toss-up.

On the comedy side, The Banshees of Inisherin appears to have been the favorite among critics, clocking in at 87 on Metacritic, closely followed at 81 points by Everything Everywhere All at Once and Glass Onion. Interestingly, viewers rated Glass Onion lower than the other two films, showing that there could be some appeal within Hollywood that is not transferring to a more general audience.

Which TV shows are favored to win at the 80th Golden Globes?

Similar to the films nominated, TV shows are also organized by genre.

Best Series Categories

Best Drama Series

  • Better Call Saul
  • The Crown
  • House of the Dragon
  • Ozark
  • Severance

Best Musical/Comedy Series

  • Abbott Elementary
  • The Bear
  • Hacks
  • Only Murderers in the Building
  • Wednesday

Both of these categories are full of fan favorites but predicting which television shows will win is often harder than movies because critics focus on the most recent season of a show.

The Crown, nominated for four awards, has already taken home seven. This awards ceremony is the last opportunity for Better Call Saul to snap a Golden Globe since the show wrapped up its final season last year. This fact could give Better Call Saul an advantage as it is their last chance to win for their work in the series. However, HBO’s House of the Dragon, a prequel to the much-beloved Game of Thrones series, could give its competitors a run for their money.

Abbott Elementary continues to be a favorite for both viewers and critics, with many hoping that the cast will take home the award. However, much of the love came before the premiere of Netflix’s Wednesday, which smashed streaming records around the world.
