2024 State of the Union address: What to expect

The purpose of the address is to report on the current condition of the country, outline the president’s legislative agenda and priorities, and provide recommendations for Congress to consider.

However, given the timing of the speech, it is to be expected that President Biden will use it to present himself as the best alternative come November.

His address comes on the heels of Super Tuesday, where he emerged as the Democratic front runner and Donald Trump as the Republican favorite.

As the event comes in the heat of the presidential race, the president is expected to discuss not just his administration’s accomplishments, but also domestic and international hot-button issues such as criticisms of his age and his response to the Israel-Hamas war.
