States across the country send out monthly benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, and they continue to distribute October payments.

SNAP provides financial assistance to low-income families to purchase certain foods through an Electronic Benefits Transfer card, which works like a debit card to purchase groceries at certain approved establishments.

The amount sent each month depends on the size of the household, as well as its gross and net income and other requirements. Through Oct. 1 of next year, the maximum amounts for the 48 contiguous United States and the District of Columbia are as follows:

  • 1 household member: $292
  • 2 members: $536
  • 3 members: $768
  • 4 members: $975
  • 5 members: $1,158
  • 6 members: $1,390
  • 7 members: $1,536
  • 8 members: $1,756
  • Each additional member: +$220

Maximum allowances for a family of four range from $1,258 to $1,953 in Alaska, while the maximum allowance for a family of four in Hawaii is $1,723.

Meanwhile, the minimum benefit for the 48 states and the District of Columbia will remain at $23. The minimum monthly payment in Alaska will range from $30 to $47, while in Hawaii it is $41. You can see the complete payment tables and all the details about the increase in SNAP benefits on the program’s website.

SNAP: What can you buy with your EBT card?

According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service, you can use your EBT card anywhere that accepts food stamps. You can buy any food for your household, such as the following:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Meat, poultry, and fish
  • Dairy products
  • Breads and cereals
  • Other foods such as snacks and non-alcoholic beverages
  • Seeds and plants, which produce food for the home

However, recipients cannot use food stamps or the EBT card to purchase beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes or tobacco, vitamins, medications and supplements, live animals, foods that are hot at the point of sale, and any non-food items.

You can review the SNAP-associated establishments that accept the EBT card in the state where you live on the SNAP website.
