30 injured after crowd hit in East Hollywood: all that is known

Tragedy struck early Saturday morning in East Hollywood when a car plowed through a crowd waiting to enter a nightclub. 30 people were injured in the incident, nearly two dozen were taken to hospital to be treated the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

One of those was the driver of the car who bystanders in the area attacked before a person shot him. He is now in police custody while he is undergoing surgery and authorities are searching for the shooter.

How the event unfolded

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Rampart Patrol officers received a call around 2 am local time of an assault with a deadly weapon at the Vermont Hollywood nightclub. The venue, located near the intersection of Vermont Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard, was hosting a reggae/hip hop event that was wrapping up when the situation unfolded.

A Nissan Versa had plowed into a line of people as they were leaving the nightclub. In total 18 women and 12 men in their 20s and 30s were injured in the incident. At least seven individuals were in critical condition and six in serious condition, according to Capt. Adam Van Gerpen, public information officer for the LA City Fire Department.

Early reports from witnesses at the scene said that the driver made a U-turn before ramming his car into the line of people before smashing in a valet stand and taco truck, where it got stuck.

The local CBS station reports that the person driving the car had been kicked out of nearby business, but police have yet to confirm that information. There were also reports of a fight breaking out in front of the nightclub just prior to the incident.

After the driver drove into the crowd, people at the scene pulled him from the car and began to beat him. Then at some point an individual shot him and then fled the scene heading westbound from Vermont Avenue.

Police seek help to clarify what happened

Police are investigating the shooting as a crime and seeking any information that witnesses may have. The shooter is described as a five-foot-nine Hispanic male, weighing around 180 pounds, bald, wearing a blue jersey and possibly armed with a silver revolver.

In order to clarify exactly how the situation unfolded, authorities are asking anyone that was at the scene to share any pictures or videos that they may have of the events as they happened.
