Walmart is offering refunds on unwanted charges suffered by customers at the American retail giant’s self-service checkouts, after many shoppers accidentally registered for the Walmart+ rewards scheme.

The spate of inadvertent sign-ups occurred in July during Walmart+ Week, a four-day sale period launched to compete with Amazon Prime Day. Among the deals offered by the store, customers had the opportunity to purchase a year’s membership to Walmart+ for a half-price $49.

At self-service checkouts in Walmart stores across the US, the promotion appeared on screen in a single-click prompt that presented customers with the options “Not interested” or “Add membership to cart”. Many people accidentally selected “Add membership to cart”.

$49 refund: who can get it and how to ask for it

If you’re among those who signed up for Walmart+ without meaning to, you can get your money back. After coming in for heavy criticism on social media, Walmart removed the prompt from its self-service checkouts and is offering refunds on its $49 promotion - but only to those customers who haven’t yet activated their Walmart+ membership.

“Any customers who inadvertently took advantage of this offer at a self-checkout and have not activated it can get a full refund with proof of purchase,” a Walmart spokesperson told Best Life. “Customers can work with in-store associates to receive a refund.”

Launched in 2020, Walmart+ is a loyalty scheme similar to Amazon Prime. At its full price, it costs $98 a year and has a $13 monthly plan.

Benefits include unlimited free home delivery on orders over $35, early access to special promotions and fuel perks at Exxon, Mobil, Walmart, Murphy and Sam’s Club gas stations. Membership also comes with a subscription to the streaming service Paramount+.

To sign up, visit Walmart.com/plus, where you’ll get a free 15-day trial. You will need to enter payment information at this stage.

You can also double your trial period to 30 days by responding to a brief survey about your household. It asks you questions such as how many people you live with, what other subscriptions you have and whether you have children or pets.
