$5 Gold Half Eagle
The $5 gold Half-Eagle dates back to 1795, and according to coin experts at NGC Coins, these were the first gold coins ever minted by the US government. Depending on the coin’s condition, the lowest bids start at $15,000, while the highest can reach well into the seven figures. Currently, the most sought-after coin is the 1798 coin, and you will need to find a retailer as these coins are no longer in circulation. During the Great Depression, President Franklin Roosevelt was looking to increase its gold reserves, and it started by melting down many of these coins, which made them attractive to collectors.
On APIMEX, the rare metals online retailer, has a few of these coins listed for under $800, as they have certain defects that lower its overall value.
Double Eagle 1933
The 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Edge is one of the rarest and most valuable U.S. coins in existence today, as it is one of the very few gold coins still in circulation. In 2021, one of these coins sold at auction for nearly $19 million, making it the most expensive coin in the world.
Bronze penny from 1943
The Mint stopped using bronze in pennies to preserve material for the war effort, making the 1943 Lincoln bronze cent “the most famous mistake in American numismatics,” according to David Stone, a coin cataloger for Heritage Auctions. One example sold for $1.7 million at auction in 2018. PCGS reported that the error occurred in 1942 when the a these left-over bronze planchets were miss-marked with the 1943 stamp.
1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent
Issued in 1909, the first year Lincoln cent is extremely valuable for its deep red color and low mintage. The coin was designed by Victor David Brenner and features the initials VDB on the coin, which is the coin's primary distinctive feature. The most expensive coin sold for $60,000 and is one of the hardest to find.
1940 Mercury Dime, Mint State Grade-67
According to Altier Rare Coins, Mercury dimes, especially those graded Mint State-67 and featuring full bands, are increasing in value due to high demand resulting from their rarity.
This was one of the coins the Florida based rare coin retailer recommended to those looking to invest in the market. “These coins have shown consistent value appreciation, making them an attractive investment for the future,” argued ARC.
