Making thousands of dollars with a small 50-cent coin is possible if you have the right specimen. Every day, millions of coins circulate in the United States, majority of which are exchanged at face value. However, there are some coins that can increase their value thanks to the practice of coin-collecting.

Such is the case of the 50-cent coins called “Walking Liberty.” These coins are among the most sought after by coin hunters thanks to their artistic design and the history they represent. The “Walking Liberty” coins were minted between 1916 and 1947, which means they were in circulation during times that remained etched in the country’s collective memory, such as World War I and II and the Great Depression.

The exact value of a Walking Liberty half dollar will depend on whether it has any minting errors or unique features, and its current condition. One of the most valuable pieces is a 1946 coin, which averages $27,500. The most expensive piece was sold for $31,200 at auction in 2021.

The “Walking Liberty” coins were designed by renowned sculptor and engraver Adolph A. Weinman. They feature the symbol of liberty over a rising sun and the American flag in the background, accompanied by the phrase, “LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST”. The coins which can be worth up to $27,500, are those minted in 1946 by the Denver Mint.

To find out if you have one, check the year and the reverse of the coin, which should show a soaring eagle, and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “HALF DOLLAR”. You should also check to see if it has a “D” mark, which indicates it was part of an issue of 2,151,000.
