The exact amount that is received each month depends on each person’s situation. However, the SSA notes that the average monthly payment in 2023 for a retired worker in the US is $1,907, while SSI recipients can get up to $943 for an individual, and $1,415 for a married couple in which both spouses are eligible for the program.

The payment date for retired workers is linked to the day of their birth, while SSI recipients receive their check on the first day of every month - as long as that date doesn’t fall on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday. In the event that that should happen, the date of payment is moved forward to the earliest available business day.

Next month begins with a Thursday that is not a holiday, so August 1, 2024 will see individual recipients of the SSI program receive a check for a maximum of $943.

As for retired workers, as mentioned, the date depends on their day of birth. Those who were born between the 1st and 10th of the month receive their money on the second Wednesday of each month. Those whose birthday falls between the 11th and 20th get their check on the third Wednesday of the month, while those born between 21st and 31st are paid on the fourth Wednesday.

For beneficiaries who began receiving their payments before May 1997, the check is deposited on the 3rd of the month, unless that date falls on a weekend or holiday. That is the case in August 2024, so this payment date has been brought forward to Friday 2nd.

Why are there two SSI payments in August 2024?
