A 90-year-old retiree is fighting to avoid paying $14,200 in ‘unknown’ fees: “We don’t know what they’re for”
The accused will testify before the judge this month in an attempt to avoid being evicted.
Song Maeng, a 90‑year‑old resident of Hollywood, California, is facing a possible eviction after allegedly failing to pay $14,000 in fees. But according to his attorney, Jonathan Segura, Maeng had no idea he owed anything — and now he’s at risk of losing his home.
The eviction notice arrived late last year, yet neither Maeng nor his attorney knows what the charges are for.“We don’t know what these fees represent. We don’t know if it’s rent, if it’s some kind of administrative charge — we’re just trying to get more information,” Segura explained. He added that officials still haven’t provided a clear breakdown of the amount they’re demanding, leaving them in the dark about why Maeng supposedly owes the money.
The situation is especially troubling given Maeng’s age and health.“He’s 90 years old. Evicting someone of his age and condition in Los Angeles is an extreme hardship,” Segura said.
He tried to pay — but they refused
Segura also noted that Maeng was willing to pay the full amount just to stay in his home, but the landlord or management company wouldn’t accept it.“He offered to pay the $14,000 and remain in the unit, but the response was, ‘No, we want you out in two weeks,’” the attorney said.
Court date set for early February
Maeng and his attorney are scheduled to appear in court this month. A judge will then decide whether the 90‑year‑old can stay in his home or will be forced to find a new place to live.
