A fire broke out in the Soho neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, seeming to affect a rooftop of a building on a residential street lined with apartment buildings and shops.

The two-alarm fire burned on the rooftop just after 6 a.m., with flames visible from the street level. A neighbour tried to assist firefighters by providing them with water from a nearby hydrant.

Fortunately, the New York City Fire Department responded quickly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to many adjacent structures. No one has been reported injured.

What is a two-alarm fire?

A two-alarm fire requires assistance from other departments for a more pumpers and ladder trucks.

Fires in densely populated areas like Soho can be particularly dangerous due to the close proximity of buildings and the potential for rapid spread. The cast-iron facades and fire escapes characteristic of Soho’s architecture pose unique challenges for firefighting efforts. Fortunately, in this incident, the fire appears to have been contained to the rooftop, minimizing damage to the building itself and preventing injuries.
