A ‘pilot’ was hired, promoted to captain and no one detected the problem for 16 years

An Air Canada pilot has been criminally charged with serving as a captain on more than 900 flights over a 16-year period without holding the certification required for the position. The Canadian airline maintains that passenger safety “was never compromised” because the pilot successfully completed all required recurrent training and proficiency evaluations.

According to investigators, the pilot served on more than 900 Air Canada flights between 2009 and 2025 without holding the Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate required to act as the captain of a commercial airliner. The accused is Geoffrey Wall, 59, who joined Canada’s largest airline in 1998 and was promoted to captain in 2009. Canadian authorities said Wall did not possess the Airline Transport Pilot certificate, the highest level of pilot certification required to captain commercial airline flights.

Prosecutors allege that Wall submitted falsified credentials to both the airline and aviation regulators. The deputy chief of the Peel Regional Police, which serves part of the Greater Toronto Area, compared the case to “a doctor that is licensed to practice family medicine but is doing brain surgery in their office,” adding that the allegations “read like a movie script.”

Transport Canada uncovered the issue during a regulatory review of Wall’s credentials, which ultimately led to the criminal investigation. Authorities have not yet determined how the pilot was able to appear compliant with the certification requirements for commercial airline captains for 16 years.

In a statement, Air Canada said that safety was never compromised because the pilot held a valid commercial pilot license, completed all required training, and passed every mandatory recurrent proficiency evaluation. Wall is no longer employed by the Canadian airline.
