After the death of Jimmy Carter, how many former U.S. presidents are still alive?
Jimmy Carter was the oldest and longest-lived former president when he died. After his passing there remain just four living former presidents.
Jimmy Carter became the oldest and longest-lived former U.S. president on 21 March 2019 when he surpassed George H.W. Bush who died the previous year at 94 years and 171 days of age. Carter was 100 years old when he passed away on December 29, 2024 at his home in Plains, Georgia where he had been receiving hospice care since 19 February, 2023.
With his death, the number of former presidents still alive has dwindled to just four. They include Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump.
Both Clinton and Obama entered the White House when they were in their 40s. Like Carter, the younger Bush became president in his 50s and Trump was 70 at the time of his inauguration. Here’s a look at the remaining living former presidents.
Bill Clinton (78 years old)
Bill Clinton, born 19 August 1946, served as the Democratic governor of Arkansas before moving into the White House in 1993. He defeated George H.W. Bush to become the 42nd President of the United States. He was 46 when he took his first presidential oath of office and served for two terms. Upon leaving office in 2001 he was 54 years old.
George W. Bush (78 years old)
George W. Bush, born on 6 July 1946, served as the Republican governor of Texas before defeating Al Gore in 2000 to become the 43rd President of the United States. He entered the White House eight years after his father, George H.W. Bush, left and was 54 years old. Unlike his father, he was re-elected to a second term in 2004. When he left the left office in 2009 he was 62 years old.
Barack Obama (63 years old)
Barack Obama, born 4 August 1961, was serving as a Democratic U.S. Senator for Illinois when he won his first U.S. presidential election. He beat fellow Senator John McCain, who ran on the Republican ticket in 2008, to become the first African American president of the United States. When he was sworn into office in 2009 as the 44th President of the United States he was just 47 years old. He served two terms in the White House and was 55 when he left office.
Donald Trump (78 years old)
Donald Trump, born 14 June 1946, was a businessman and celebrity before he was elected the 45th President of the United States. He beat Hillary Clinton, wife of former President Clinton, in what was seen as an upset election. He was 70 years old when he was inaugurated in 2017 making him the oldest person to be elected to the highest office in the land. He took the title from Ronald Regan who was 69 when he entered the White House. Trump served one term in office, leaving at the age of 74. He won the 2024 election over Democratic opponent Kamala Harris and will serve another term at the age of 78.
