Amazon’s annual Prime Day is upon us. Beginning at 12:00 a.m. on July 12 and lasting until 11:58 p.m. July 13, both Pacific time, many deals will be released exclusively for members of the company’s Prime membership programme.

Between Prime Day, free shipping and additional services Amazon has added over the years, membership is booming. There are currently more than 200 million Prime members worldwide according to ex-CEO Jeff Bezos in a shareholder letter from last year. Despite this, the price of an Amazon Prime membership went up in February. For those that want to pay monthly it will cost you $14.99 per month for a total of $180 per year. However, if you pay the full year at one go the price is $139. Students get a discounted rate, $7.49 per month or $69 per year.

Starting in 2015 as a daylong event to celebrate the company’s 20th birthday, Amazon has extended the one-day opportunity to a 48-hour shopping frenzy. Customers can find deals on a wide range of sought-after items. The deals can take the form of Lightning Deals to ones that have begun even before the main event.

Though it may appear that the number of deals is high, be aware that prices for many products may be cheaper at another time of the year. Regardless, here are some ways to maximise savings for the next two days.

Prime day notifications

You can watch the upcoming deals you’re interested in by visiting the Prime Day page and selecting Watch this deal. If you have the Amazon app you can also sign up for push notifications to be notified five minutes before the deals start.

Helping small businesses

To make it easier to find small brands, Amazon has put a new Small Business Badge on the site. If you are unwilling to pay money to a company that is regularly criticised for poor workplace practices, this could be an option.

Lightning deals

Lightning Deals can be found throughout Amazon, and are available on the Today’s Deals or Prime Day page. Those deals are available for only one per customer.

These deals are a promotion on a limited number of items and they are also time limited. Who doesn’t love fomo?
