An American replicates the Coca-Cola formula after a year of research and organic chemistry analysis: “Natural flavors”
The YouTuber LabCoatz claims to have uncovered the legendary Coca-Cola recipe and says his homemade soda is an almost perfect copy.
Coca-Cola has been part of society since the late nineteenth century, yet almost no one knows the secret behind its formula. The original recipe remains one of the great mysteries of the modern world, but one person claims to have solved it after extensive research and countless scientific experiments.
The YouTuber LabCoatz is convinced that his homemade Coca-Cola is nearly identical to the original. He explains this in his latest viral video, in which he describes how he used a range of tools and conducted laboratory tests to unravel the mysteries of this iconic drink.
LabCoatz begins by saying that after personally tasting several failed attempts to replicate Coca-Cola’s flavor, he decided to try something different: mass spectrometry. This analytical technique is used to identify the chemical substances present in a liquid.
“If I add all the main flavors found in real Coca-Cola, it should taste like the original,” he says in the video.
In search of Coca-Cola’s “natural flavors”
According to its makers, Coca-Cola is made from sugar, caffeine, phosphoric acid, coloring, carbonated water, and a series of “natural flavors” that are never specified. This is where the great mystery of the drink lies.
To figure out what those flavors might be, the content creators carried out numerous tests using lemon, lime, vanilla, coriander, and cinnamon, but all of them failed. They then used the information they had gathered, along with research published in a scientific journal, to narrow down the types of flavors they needed.
That is when they discovered something unexpected. Small amounts of vinegar and wine tannins help give Coca-Cola its strong, distinctive taste.
After spending a year conducting all kinds of tests and experiments, LabCoatz produced a final version of his Coca-Cola that, in his view, rivals the original. “I can’t even tell them apart,” he says in the video.
