Update:

Facial cleansing is the first step in any skincare routine—and ironically, one of the most overlooked. Most of us rush through it: a splash of water, a quick swipe of cleanser, a fast rinse, and we’re out the door. But that seemingly simple step can be the difference between balanced, healthy skin and a complexion that’s irritated, dehydrated, or dull.

Dermatologists, cosmetic chemists, and skincare experts have been saying it for years: it’s not just what you use, but how you use it. And within that “how,” there’s one factor most people never think about—the temperature of the water.

The myth of cold water and “tightened” pores

For years, cold water has been praised as a morning wake‑up trick that supposedly “tightens” pores after cleansing. Social media is full of icy‑water routines promising firmer, more radiant skin. But dermatologists say the science simply doesn’t back that up.

Dr. Andrea Combalia, dermatologist and author of Piel sana in corpore sano, explained it clearly in an interview with Telva: “Washing your face with very cold water from the start can reduce the effectiveness of your cleanser because it makes it harder to remove residue.”

Why? Cold temperatures make the skin contract and solidify oils. That means sebum becomes thicker and harder to break down, so your cleanser can’t emulsify it as effectively. The result: leftover sunscreen, makeup, and pollution particles that cling to the skin—even if that icy splash feels refreshing in the moment.
