Another massive virus outbreak in China: What we know about chikungunya and how fast it’s spreading
Authorities are tackling the mosquito-borne virus with mass fumigation, drone surveillance, and fines for households who don’t pour away standing water.

China is confronting a new public health emergency with over 7,000 cases of chikungunya infection confirmed in the past month. Most of the cases have been reported in Foshan city, Guangdong Province.

Chikungunya disease is caused by the chikungunya virus and is spread to humans through mosquito bites. Can you die from chikungunya disease?
Most people get better within a week but those with chronic health issues such as diabetes or heart disease are more susceptible although death from chikungunya is very rare.
The virus has triggered aggressive containment measures reminiscent of the Covid-19 pandemic-era protocols, including mass fumigation, drone surveillance, and fines for households who fail to tip away standing water - the perfect breeding ground for mosquitos.
Chikungunya is spread by two mosquito species: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus—which thrive in warm, humid climates where there is abundant stagnant water.

How to stop mosquitoes from biting you in summer
Prevention is the best protection. That means using insect repellent - either natural, plant-based active ingredients such as oil of lemon eucalyptus, or synthetic repellents such as DEET and picaridin. Other tips to ward off mosquitoes is to wear long-sleeved shirts and pants. Installing screens on windows and doors and throwing away standing water will help to stop them entering your house.
Anyone traveling to China from the United States can get one of two chikungunya vaccines that are approved for use in the US: IXCHIQ - a live-attenuated vaccine or VIMKUNYA, a virus-like particle vaccine.
