Archaeologists in Germany have stumbled upon an enigmatic tunnel, a phenomenon rarely seen in medieval Europe

The Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Monument Conservation and Archaeology (LDA) began excavating a site in the city of Reinstedt, Germany, to ensure that the construction of a wind farm would not damage possible archaeological remains. What they found was much more extraordinary.

During the investigation, a large trapezoidal Neolithic trench was discovered. Inside it, archaeologists found a stone slab next to an oval pit. At first, they believed it to be a tomb, but later confirmed that it was an erdstall-type tunnel, about one meter high and only 50 to 70 centimeters wide.

These medieval underground galleries are relatively common in Europe, yet their primary function remains unknown. Because they are extremely narrow and appear in multiple locations, no definitive conclusions can be drawn about their original purpose.

Strange history of hidden tunnels

Inside the tunnel, archaeologists found several objects, including an iron horseshoe, a fox skeleton, and other mammal bones. Deeper inside, they identified traces of a small fire and piles of stones, suggesting that the entrance had been intentionally blocked.

The materials found indicate that the tunnel was likely built between the 10th and 13th centuries. Researchers have proposed several theories: it may have served as a temporary shelter or as a pagan tomb used for illicit activities or cult rituals. Due to its tiny size, which allows only one person to pass while crouching or moving sideways, some experts suggest symbolic functions, such as initiation rites or spiritual practices.

These European tunnels often share similar structural features: multiple interconnected levels and passages so narrow that crawling is sometimes required. They are usually located beneath old farmhouses, near churches and cemeteries, or in remote forested areas.
