Bank of America to close all branches in the United States on these dates: no in-person service available

Bank of America is preparing to temporarily close all of its U.S. branches on December 25 and January 1, 2026, in observance of the Christmas Day and New Year’s Day holidays, respectively.

Banks follow the Federal Reserve holiday calendar, which includes 11 federal holidays each year. On these days, employees are given time off. In addition to Bank of America, several major banks will also be closed on December 25 and January 1, 2026, including Wells Fargo, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Chase, Citibank, U.S. Bank, SunTrust Bank, Capital One, Citizens Bank, Santander Bank, BBVA, and Compass.

Although most banks will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, online banking services and ATMs will remain available. Customers can still complete many everyday banking tasks, such as paying bills online, transferring money between accounts, withdrawing or depositing cash at ATMs, checking balances, reviewing transactions through mobile apps, and more.

However, it is important to note that if you schedule payments on a federal holiday, processing may not begin until the bank reopens on the next business day. In this case, that would be December 26 and January 2. Additionally, some banks operate with reduced hours on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Businesses that close on Christmas and New Year’s Day

Since Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are official federal holidays, federal government offices are required to close, and employees receive a paid day off. Additionally, schools, post offices, public libraries, and stock exchanges will also be closed.

Most major grocery stores and retail shops are expected to operate with shorter hours on Christmas Eve and close entirely on December 25. As for restaurants and dining options, some will remain open, while others may operate with reduced hours or close for the day.

On New Year’s Day, most grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, and retail stores are typically open. So far, Costco has confirmed that it will be closed.

• Martin Luther King Jr. Day (third Monday of January): January 19, 2026
• Washington’s Birthday or Presidents’ Day (third Monday of February): February 16, 2026
• Memorial Day (last Monday of May): May 25, 2026
• Juneteenth: June 19, 2026
• Independence Day: July 3, 2026 (observed one day earlier since July 4 falls on a Saturday in 2026)
• Labor Day (first Monday of September): September 7, 2026
• Columbus Day (second Monday of October): October 12, 2026
• Veterans Day: November 11, 2026
• Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday of November): November 26, 2026
• Christmas Day: December 25, 2026
