Update:

Barnes & Noble is going against the grain by expanding its number of brick-and-mortar stores in the United States. Already the bookseller with the largest number of outlets in the country, with approximately 600 locations, Barnes & Noble has opened 32 stores so far in 2025, with another 28 expected to follow before the end of the year.

According to USA Today, the company’s expansion comes after a somewhat surprising recent sales boom, following around a decade of declining store performance.

A long history in books

Barnes & Noble began as Arthur Hinds and Company in 1886, became Hinds & Noble in 1894, and later adopted the Barnes & Noble name in 1917. The company rose to nationwide popularity in the 1990s and 2000s, when a series of mergers and bankruptcies in the American bookstore industry left it as the only national chain.
