Chris Rock and Will Smith will go down in Oscars history for starring in one of the most controversial award ceremonies, after one of the Men in Black stars slapped the comedian on-stage following a bad joke about his wife’s alopecia condition.

As if that wasn’t enough, after the incident, the Academy awarded him the Best Actor award for his performance in King Richard, a decision that was criticised by some, at least that it stood following review. Then, almost two weeks after the event, the Academy announced that it would ban the actor for the 10 years, with the ban ending in 2032.

Although the decision shocked more than a few people, Smith is not the only celebrity to be banned by the Academy.

Who has been banned from the Academy Awards before Will Smith?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards has a short list of banned celebrities. Here’s who they are:

  • Carmine Caridi: the first actor in history to be banned from the Academy. His veto came in 2004 after he was accused of piracy with the films participating in the award ceremony.
  • Kevin Spacey: after receiving 30 accusations of sexual abuse, Spavey was banned from the Oscars by Academy officials.
  • Harvey Weinstein: also banned from the Academy for allegations of sexual abuse. In fact, the famous producer is currently in prison for it.
  • Adam Kimmel: the cinematographer was expelled after being accused of sexual abuse of minors.
  • Bill Cosby: he was derobed in 2018, a month after he was convicted of sexually assaulting former basketball player Andrea Constand.
  • Roman Polanski: after the #MeToo movement pressured the Academy to veto Polanski for having sex with an underage girl in 1977, the Academy responded and vetoed him in 2018.
