Having a dog has been shown to be good for humans, both physically and emotionally. They often offer emotional support and companionship, helping to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Many American households are benefiting from the advantages these animals bring. The latest statistics indicate that more than 65 million homes in the country own a dog.

If you have decided that you want one for your home too, and prefer an even-tempered pet because you have small children or simply don’t want a high-strung one, here are some breeds you might want to consider.

Labrador retriever

The Labrador retriever had a more than three-decade run as the most popular breed in the United States, until it was upstaged by the French bulldog in 2023. Despite losing its number one spot, it remains one of the top choices and sits closely at number two. There’s a reason it’s been chosen by many homes: this breed is typically friendly and kind, and rarely exhibits aggressive behavior towards people or other animals.

Bulldog

Despite a countenance that could intimidate the faint-hearted, the Bulldog is a great home companion, especially to children. They are calm and outgoing, and take well to a family atmosphere. This breed is loyal and highly trainable, and can easily adapt to their surroundings. If you’re a laidback person, this breed could be a good fit as bulldogs aren’t particularly active and won’t badger you to be taken out. Though they would still need regular exercise to stay healthy.

They form strong bonds with their owners and enjoy spending time with them, often following them around the house and seeking attention and affection. This breed is generally good with children, and can be playful and gentle companions for kids. They often have a patient and tolerant temperament, making them suitable pets for families.
