There are less than eight months remaining before voters troop to the polls to elect the country’s next president, and it appears both the main candidates are not popular with a significant percentage of Americans.

Republicans are expected to choose Donald Trump as their candidate during their national convention in July, while the Democrats will formally nominate President Joe Biden as their presidential bet in August.

Both probable nominees are not very popular among a sector of young adults. According to the Pew Research Center, about one-fourth (26%) of Americans hold unfavorable views of both Trump and Biden, a sentiment more common among younger adults than older ones.

This “double negative” view is also held by those who do not subscribe to partisan labels. Only a measly 2% of those surveyed said they have a favorable view of both candidates.

Biden in uphill battle for popularity

The survey found that most Americans only had favorable sentiments toward one candidate: 37% of them viewed Trump favorably and Biden unfavorably, while 34% have a favorable view of Biden and an unfavorable view of Trump.

Meanwhile, the president’s approval rating is holding steady, according to data from Gallup, sitting at 40% at the latest count. The aspects of his leadership which received lower than his overall rating are the economy, foreign affairs, and his handing of the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians. Biden’s rating for his performance on the immigration problem is also sub-par.

Come November, it will not be a popularity contest between the incumbent and the ex-president, but rather a choice that the voters will make as to who the lesser evil will be.
