On Tuesday morning, September 12, House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy ordered an impeachment investigation against President Joe Biden, in an effort to prove that the president benefited financially from his son Hunter Biden’s activities.

“Today I am directing our House committee to open a formal impeachment investigation into President Joe Biden... This is a logical step that will give our committees all the power to gather all the facts and answers for the American public. It’s exactly what we want to know: the answers. I think the president would also want to answer these questions and accusations,” said McCarthy.

The root of this investigation is Hunter Biden, the President’s middle son, considered by many to be the black sheep of the family.

According to the findings of an investigation carried out by the House Oversight Committee, the Biden family businesses have “a culture of corruption”, for which a call is made to begin with a historic political trial one year before the general elections.

“These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption, and warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives,” said the California Republican, adding that “it was not an easy decision to make,” but that, “regardless of your party, or who you voted for, these events concern all Americans.”

According to McCarthy, the investigation will be led by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, and the chair of the Ways and Means Committee, Jason Smith.

There are not enough votes to open an investigation

Various officials assure that McCarthy failed to gather enough support to proceed with the vote, which is why he made the decision to open an investigation unilaterally.

That said, it is expected that throughout the week McCarthy will hold closed-door meetings with legislators to discuss the impeachment trial against the President.

The White House responds

Meanwhile, White House spokesperson Ian Sams pointed out that Republicans have been investigating Biden for nine months and that “the investigations have found no evidence of irregularities by part of the president.”

“Members of the Republican Party themselves have said it. [McCarthy] He promised to hold a vote to open the impeachment trial, now he changed his mind because he has no support. Extreme politics at its worst moment,” he wrote via social networks.

Biden’s campaign officials also criticized McCarthy’s decision, emphasizing his sudden “change of mind” due to lack of votes.

“Kevin McCarthy does not have the votes. His members are saying there is no evidence. So here we are, with McCarthy completely flip flopping, all to help out Donald Trump’s campaign,” said Ammar Moussa, rapid response director for the Biden re-election campaign.
