California minimum wage set to increase

The federal minimum wage has remained unchanged at $7.25 an hour since 2009. However, several states and cities have established higher minimum wages. In total, the District of Columbia, 30 states, and over 50 cities and counties have implemented higher minimum wages, some of which include automatic annual increases based on inflation to maintain workers’ purchasing power.

Among these states is California, which has one of the highest minimum wages in the country. Additionally, several cities in California have established minimum wages ranging from $16 to $19 per hour. Some of these cities and counties are planning to increase their respective minimum wages next year.

California cities that are raising their minimum wage in 2024

California is preparing for an increase to the state minimum wage next year.

Currently, the base wage in California is $15.50 per hour, and starting January 1, 2024, it will increase to $16. However, several cities will also increase their minimum wage, which will be higher than the state minimum. Here is the list of cities or counties in California that will raise their minimum wage starting January 1, 2024:

  • Belmont: Will increase from $16.75 to $17.35 per hour
  • Burlingame: from $16.47 to $17.03
  • Cupertino: from $17.20 to $17.75
  • Daly City: from $16.07 to $16.62
  • East Palo Alto: $16.50 to $17
  • El Cerrito: from $17.35 to $17.92
  • Foster City: $16.50 to $17
  • Half Moon Bay: from $16.45 to $17.01
  • Hayward: $16.34 to $16.90 for large businesses and $15.50 to $16 for small businesses
  • Los Altos: from $17.20 to $17.75
  • Menlo Park: from $16.20 to $16.70
  • Mountain View: from $18.15 to $18.75
  • Newbie: from $16.32 to $16.86 for companies with more than 100 employees, from $16.07 to $16.60 for businesses with 26 to 99 employees and from
