California issues extreme heat and fire alert: Affected areas and predicted temperatures
A red alert for extreme heat has been issued in Southern California and the state is braced for high temperatures.

Southern California is in the grip of a dangerous heat wave, with temperatures and humidity expected to climb through the week. Forecasters say thunderstorms are possible in some inland areas by late week, adding another layer of risk to already extreme conditions.
An excessive heat warning is in effect for much of Los Angeles from 11 a.m. Thursday through 9 p.m. Saturday. Meanwhile, a red flag warning has been issued for the San Fernando Valley and nearby canyons from 9 a.m. Wednesday through 9 p.m. Saturday, reflecting the heightened risk of wildfires in hot, dry, and windy conditions.
On Wednesday, Los Angeles and Orange County recorded highs around 90 degrees with overnight lows near 65. Forecasters warn that temperatures could approach or even break daily records on Thursday, with highs expected to reach 96 degrees. While conditions may ease slightly over the weekend, above-average heat is expected to persist.
Coastal fog, mountain storms, desert heat
Along the coast, marine layer fog is expected Wednesday, keeping highs near 77 and lows around 66. By Friday, coastal areas could see more humidity, with highs near 80.
In the mountains, scattered thunderstorms are likely starting Friday, raising the risk of flash flooding in some areas. Desert communities will see the most intense heat, with highs forecast around 102 degrees and lows near 67. Rain chances will increase later in the week, with a 30% chance of showers and storms by Sunday.
Authorities urge residents to take precautions during the heat wave, including limiting outdoor activity, staying hydrated and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Residents are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and weather alerts, particularly with the risk of wildfires expected to rise.
