The polls are now closing in less than an hour in California. While all voters were sent a ballot, reports are already predicting that this primary will see some of the lowest turn out rates in years.

Govenor

Current Govenor Gavin Newsom is seeking a second term in office after winning a recall election less than a year ago. Unlike other states where primaries are party-specific, in California, all voters are allowed to vote for any candidate and the two with the highest number of votes make it onto the November ballot.

Gavin Newsom has projected to win the primary election and will square off against Republican state lawmaker Brian Dahle in the Mid-Terms.

US Senate

Alex Padila, the former Secretary of State of California, was appointed to fill the vacant seat left by Vice President Kamala Harris. Padila has secured one of the spots on the November ballot to serve a full term as Senator from the Golden States. Polling has been unable to identify a clear second place leader with so many canididates in the field.

House of Representatives

Like other states, California has undergone a process of redistricting. This will be the first time the new congressional map is used. Leaders in the House, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and Adam Schiff who serves as Chair of the House Intelligence Committee have both won their primaries.

Los Angeles Mayoral Primary

In addition to important statewide and national elections, voters in Los Angeles will select who they want to see face off in their mayoral and sherif races in November.

The races in Los Angeles are too close to call nearly twenty-four hours after polls closed. With all candidates unable to garner a majority, a runoff election will be held. So far, business developer Rick Caruso and Congresswomen Karen Bass have qualified for the runoff.

San Francisco District Attorney Recall

In the Bay Area, residents will be voting in a recall of progressive District Attorney Chesa Boudin. Boudin faced a brutal campaign from more conservative residents who opposed their sweeping overhauls to the criminal justice system. Boudin lost has reportedly lost his recall election, sad news to many who had supported his efforts.

What happens next? The Board of Supervisors will first certify the election results and within ten days, Boudin will be removed from office. The decision on who should replace the former DA will fall to San Francisco mayor London Breed.
