The court case between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard captured the public’s attention for months and catapulted some of the key figures from the trial into international recognition. One of those particularly prominent in the Fairfax court case was Camille Vasquez, an attorney for Depp’s legal team.

Vasquez’s no-nonsense courtroom demeanour and dogged determination when questioning made her a compelling figure for those watching the trial unfold. Her approach was credited by some for Depp’s victory, which saw his ex-wife ordered to pay more than $10 million in compensation. She has received numerous invitations to appear on television, job offers and even book deals, but has instead decided to make the step up to partner at her own firm.

But her fame also solicited less welcome interest in her life, including rumours of romance with Depp. When asked about the rumours in an interview with CBS News, she said that it was “disappointing”.

“It was disappointing to hear them, but I think they started because people like love stories, they like to make things up,” she explained.

When asked about the physical contact between her and Depp during the trial, she answered: “I’m touchy-feely with everyone. I mean, that’s just who I am. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with caring for your clients. I was fighting for his life, for his name.”

Vasquez reflects on their decision to appeal jury’s verdict

The jury found in favour of Depp on most counts, although both parties were found to be liable to some extent. Heard was ordered to pay Depp $10.3 million in compensation, while Depp is required to pay Heard $2 million. Both legal teams have appealed the settlement verdict.

Vasquez explained the decision to appeal, saying that they would not have opted to do so if not for the expectation that Heard’s team would do the same.

“This was never about the money for Mr. Depp,” she said. “But in order to protect his interests, as his representative, we have to respond to the appeal with his own appeal.”

CBS News’ host Gayle King pressed Vasquez on this, asking why Depp would want the matter to continue to play out in the courts rather than simply drawing a line under the whole affair.

“It’s pretty standard legal procedure,” Vasquez replied. “We just are hopeful that the court will uphold the verdict, which we think was the right verdict, and allow both parties to move on.”

Heard’s legal team were asked for comment by CBS News, but responded by saying that they would not be making comment at this time.
