TAX SEASON
Can I file my taxes before January 29th, 2024?
And just like that the 2024 tax season is upon us. What is the earliest you can submit your return to the IRS?
Tax season is here, and those looking to get their refund as soon as possible should file as quickly as possible. But when is the earliest a return can be filed?
The IRS will begin accepting and processing returns on Monday, 29 January, the earliest date to submit returns. However, around seventy percent of filers are eligible to use the IRS’ Free File program, and the platform will be opened on Friday, 12 January. Those who are hoping this will expedite the sending of their refund should be aware that the IRS will not process returns submitted before the 29th, even if the tax authority has received the return before that date.
How long will returns take to process?
The IRS has released a fact sheet stating taxpayers can expect their returns to be processed in about 21 days.
Taxpayers will also be able to track the status of their refund by using the Where’s My Refund? Tool twenty-four hours after their returns are submitted electronically. Paper filers must wait four weeks or longer to see their status updated on the online tool.
Sign up for direct deposit
To receive your return faster, provide direct deposit information to the IRS. By providing bank account information, the IRS can more efficiently deliver your return instead of sending a paper check through the mail, which can be lost, stolen, or delayed in its delivery.
Where can I find my direct deposit information?
This information is easily available through most online banking profiles. However, those with checks lying around can find their bank account and routing number at the bottom of the paper. If neither of these options works for you, your bank can provide this information directly. The IRS warns that a credit or debit card number should not be provided as the agency cannot use this information to make a direct deposit.
