Can tropical storm Beryl regain hurricane strength?

Beryl became the earliest storm to become a Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic, and at least 11 people died in its wake as it pounded the Caribbean islands a few days ago.

The hurricane was downgraded to Category 2 as it barreled through Mexico, then diminished to a tropical storm as it passed through the Yucatan Peninsula.

Can tropical storm Beryl regain hurricane strength?

Beryl is now heading toward the South Texas coast, and it is expected to once again strengthen to a hurricane as it travels over the Gulf of Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says the storm is expected to become a Category 1 hurricane when it makes landfall near Corpus Christi. State officials have warned residents that they are likely to begin feeling the storm’s effects on Sunday. Beryl is forecast to cause destructive winds, perilous storm surge, and flooding beginning late in the day.

National Hurricane Center issues strong weather advisories

According to the NHC, hurricane warnings are in effect for the Texas coast from Baffin Bay to Sargent and San Luis Pass. The stretches south of Baffin Bay to the mouth of the Rio Grande River are under hurricane watches.

The hurricane center also issued a tropical storm warning for the area north of Sargent to High Island, and the Mexican coast from Barra el Mezquital to the Rio Grande.

Storm surge warnings are up from the north entrance of the Padre Island National Seashore to High Island, including Corpus Christi Bay, Matagorda Bay and Galveston Bay.

Areas under storm surge watch include the Texas coast from the mouth of the Rio Grande River northward to North Entrance of the Padre Island National Seashore, as well as San Luis Pass to Sabine Pass.
