Receiving and cashing a check when you have a bank account is very easy. Simply walk into the bank and the money will be deposited into your account. However, it’s a bit more difficult for people who do not have a bank account. It is estimated that 4.5% of US households do not have a checking or savings account according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s survey. This equates to 5.9 million people.

Fortunately there are options available for those without a bank account to cash checks, though it may come at a cost. It is worth researching in your locality which is the cheapest option.

Visit the bank that issued the check

Most banks that issued the original check will accept it to be cashed out there. You will need to ask them if this is possible as well as bring government-issued photo ID. Non-customers may be charged a fee.

Routing numbers for the bank can be found on the bottom of the check, allowing you to find its location.

Use check-cashing services

If the original bank is out of the question then have a look at other local banks. They may charge a fee to cash the cehque too.

Use a prepaid debit card

Some banks will convert your check into a prepaid debit card. There is likely to be a monthly service fee as well as possible delays in receiving the card, something to consider if you need the money quick.

At a retail store

Some large grocery stores allow you to cash your checks there. Fees can be as low as $8 per $1,000 check meaning it is quite an enticing option. However, there are limits on how big the cashed check can be so check with the store beforehand to avoid a wasted journey.
