Opposition to the coronation of the new king
Hereditary public office goes against every democratic principle and because we can’t hold the King and his family to account at the ballot box, there’s nothing to stop them abusing their privilege, misusing their influenceor simply wasting our money.
The leader of the anti-monarchy group Republic was arrested shortly before the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday along with a handful of other protesters. They had been a part of a few hundred who lined the procession route the King was set to use on his way to and from Westminster Abbey where the royal coronation ceremony was held.
Republic says that police also seized hundreds of their placards which read “Not My King” on them.
All were released by Sunday but the police actions have people concerned about sweeping powers granted to officers.
With the limitation of attendees to 10,000 people, many people will have to stay outside the grounds of Windsor Castle. But many will be eager to watch the concert not only in Britain, but also in other parts of the world.
You can consult the Spotify playlist of the event on the website that the British Government has launched on the occasion of the coronation. This will be broadcast live by BBC studios, so it can be followed on television and also online outside the UK.
Sir Elton John is a longtime friend of the Royal Family and has attended or performed at several royal ceremonies. He was a guest at Prince William and Princess Kate’s wedding in 2011. As well Sir John performed at the luncheon following Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s wedding in 2018. He also performed for the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, although in a pre-recorded video projected onto Buckingham Palace as he had a scheduling conflict.
The “Rocket Man” singer is also friends with King Charles and Queen Camilla, they were even guests at his wedding to David Furnish in 2005.
In addition to the world-class orchestra, the concert will also feature some great artists. Among those confirmed are part of the Take That , Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. Also present will be Italian opera star Andrea Bocelli, Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel, singer-songwriter Freya Ridings and classical soul composer Alexis French.
“This will be our first live show since our last show four years ago, and what a great time to come back”, Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald, the three members of Take That who sing at the festivities said in a statement. Also, Katy Perry said she was “excited” to perform at the event.
