China is raising thousands of birds for a reason that goes beyond economics: they are seeking to exploit the rural model
A venture that seeks to satisfy the demand for meat among consumers of this bird and the sporting and cultural world.
Pigeon farming in China isn’t some quirky trend — it’s a fast‑growing industry that blends livestock production with rising demand in both the culinary and competitive sports worlds.
In early January, Engormix, a global livestock‑focused community, highlighted the phenomenon on its official Instagram account, noting how quickly it’s expanding across the country.
Traditional chicken farming in China is increasingly feeling the pressure as pigeon breeding gains ground. According to Engormix, pigeon production is becoming a strategic alternative with “multiple applications and strong long‑term potential.” The shift is already visible in several regions, driven by the birds’ value in high‑end cuisine, cultural traditions, and even sports.
A booming market for meat and competition
Most pigeon farms cater to specialized markets and upscale restaurants. In China, pigeon meat is considered a delicacy — and in some cultural traditions, it’s even believed to have medicinal benefits.
At the same time, another segment of the industry focuses on breeding pigeons for sport. Racing pigeons, in particular, can be incredibly valuable, with Engormix noting that they “move millions in competitions, genetics, and trade.”
Cage‑raised or free‑range — and always cost‑efficient
The surge in interest isn’t random. From a production standpoint, pigeons require far less space, less feed, and lower operating costs than many other livestock species. Those advantages have attracted small and mid‑sized producers across China, who see pigeon farming as a promising business opportunity.
The country is investing heavily in modern breeding centers and selective breeding programs that prioritize speed, navigation skills, and exceptional endurance — traits prized in both racing and commercial production.
A tightly controlled breeding process
Egg collection is meticulous: each egg is selected, cleaned, and placed in an incubator. After hatching, young pigeons are raised in controlled environments with stable temperatures and carefully managed diets to ensure healthy development. Depending on the facility, once the birds reach a certain age, they’re either moved to outdoor enclosures or kept in specialized cages.
