There’s not just one or two major chains that are giving their employees a much needed rest, but a long list of stores will be shuttered the day before Black Friday. Retail employees will be able to enjoy their turkey and stuffing with family and friends the day before Christmas shopping officially starts.

Walmart, Costco, Walgreens, Target and many other retail chains will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Nov. 28 is still four weeks away as turkey day appears late on the holiday calendar this November. Any last minute shopping will have to be done at shops or supermarkets that aren’t on the list before. Target started the trend at its stores in 2020 according to a statement by CEO Brian Cornell:

“It’s hard to believe nearly four years have passed since we last opened our stores on Thanksgiving. Staying closed for the first time on Thanksgiving Day 2020 helped us take care of our team and guests during the pandemic. But once I heard from team members how much they appreciated that time with their families, it was an easy decision to make the policy permanent, and our store teams have had that time off ever since,” he said.

Other retailers have followed suit as you can see in the long list below:

  • Aldi
  • Ashley Furniture
  • Barnes & Noble
  • Bath & Body Works
  • Best Buy
  • BJ’s Wholesale Club
  • Bloomingdale’s
  • Burlington Coat Factory
  • Costco
  • Crate and Barrel
  • DICK'S Sporting Goods
  • Home Depot
  • HomeGoods
  • JCPenney
  • Kohl’s
  • Macy’s
  • Publix
  • Target
  • TJ Maxx
  • T-Mobile
  • Trader Joe’s
  • Walgreens
  • Walmart
    And others…

So, preparations for Thanksgiving will need some planning and organization this year. Convenience stores are always an option, but they definitely have higher prices and less variety. This isn’t the first year that some major retailers have closed in order to give their employees a much needed rest.
