Cold weather in Florida: What is the record low temperature in Miami?

Miami is known for its short sunny and warm winters which attract millions of visitors a year. However, even the freezing cold can reach the Magic City.

Even Jack Frost likes to visit Miami

Miami is known for its short winters that are sunny, warm and dry that makes it not just a playground for the rich and famous but also attract over 50 million visitors a year. Its climate is thanks to its proximity to the Gulf Stream which keeps temperatures relatively consistent most of the year.

However, while the Magic City has the warmest winter temperatures on the United States mainland even Jack Frost likes to pay a visit south of the Tropic of Cancer every now and then.

Cold weather in Florida: What is the record low temperature in Miami?

The most popular time to visit Miami is between November and mid-April when Old Man Winter makes its presence felt in the rest of the country. Those months the city typically has average temperatures ranging from 68 to 82 degrees in November and then again in April, but in January, which has the coldest monthly averages, the range drops to 60 to 76 degrees.

About three times a year, the lows will fall to 50 degrees or below. It’s even rarer for temperatures to go much lower, with just eight years from 1981 to 2010 registering 40 degrees or less. However, thermometers in Miami, according to national climatological records for the city, have registered at or below freezing temperatures multiple times between December and March over the past century.

A cold spell in February 1917 saw the mercury drop to 27 degrees, the coldest temperature recorded in the city. In January 1977 Miami also had a first, that was reported at least, with snow falling on Miami Beach. That event though is not in the official record as none of the flurries found their way onto a National Weather Service monitoring station.
