Colombian Government Debunks Rumor: No child has been named ‘ChatGPT’
In a statement issued Tuesday, August 19, the organization stated that no newborn registration has been generated with that name.
Although several media outlets and social networks reported over the weekend that a couple from Cereté, Córdoba, had registered their newborn daughter with the name Chat Yipiti Bastidas Guerra, inspired by the AI chatbot ChatGPT, the story has been debunked.
Despite claims that the registration took place on August 15, the National Civil Registry issued a statement on Tuesday, August 19, confirming that “after consulting the databases produced and managed by the entity, there is currently no birth registration under the name ‘Chat Yipiti.’”
The document, signed by Álvaro Alfonso Araújo, acting deputy registrar for Civil Registration and Identification, also clarified that the conclusion came after reviewing records from the Notary Office of Cereté, Córdoba, after no registration with the name was found.
The controversy, explained
Even though its existence was denied, the case of Chat Yipiti reflects how artificial intelligence and digital culture are increasingly influencing not just work, education, and entertainment, but deeply personal areas like identity.
Colombia has seen other unusual baby names, such as Millos David González Tobón, Dayana Valentina Shakira, and even a child registered as 6 Martínez Medina. Colombian law is flexible in this regard. While the Registry can reject a name if deemed offensive or inappropriate, registrars may also choose not to object.
The rumor sparked a wave of reactions on social media. Some users mocked the situation, while others criticized it, arguing that such a name could expose the child to ridicule or stigma. Sarcastic comments like “now she won’t be able to get a visa” or “parenting isn’t for everyone” flooded digital platforms.
