The second Monday of October is set aside in the United States to celebrate the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus on October 12, 1492. It is also used to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

While the latter is not a federal holiday, the former is, which means that government offices are closed and there is no postal service. However, as is typical with many federal holidays in the United States it can vary from business to business what is open and what is closed.

Columbus Day 2024: are stock markets open on Monday?

As Monday, October 14, 2024, is a federal holiday, the Federal Reserve will be closed so interbank transactions will not be processed until the next day. The stock market generally follows the “bank holiday” schedule, but not so with Columbus Day.

Traders will be at work at the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Composite on Monday. However, the bond markets won’t be open for business.

As for other financial institutions, according to CNN branches of Bank of America, Citibank and Wells Fargo will be closed, but Chase Bank and TD Bank will be open.

What else will be closed for Columbus Day?

For many other stores and supermarkets it will be business as usual on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day. For those that need to mail a package, while the post office will be closed private carriers will still be operating.
