2023 was tough for Walmart: Complete list of stores that were closed last year by state

Every year Walmart closes locations across the United States that fail to make a profit. So is the case in 2023 with 23 stores across thirteen states.

For the past 17 years the retail giant has been struggling to get some stores in positive numbers, thus losing “tens of millions of dollars a year.” In the past five years, those losses nearly doubled according to Walmart. Those locations join another four scheduled to shutter, including one in Lincolnwood which was a nine-year experiment with pick-up only. The other pick-up concept store located in Benton, Arkansas were also closed.

In regards to the Chicago area, Walmart published the following information in a press release: “The simplest explanation is that collectively our Chicago stores have not been profitable since we opened the first one nearly 17 years ago – these stores lose tens of millions of dollars a year, and their annual losses nearly doubled in just the last five years. The remaining four Chicago stores continue to face the same business difficulties, but we think this decision gives us the best chance to help keep them open and serving the community,” the company stated.

The nations biggest brick-and-mortar retailor did not provide further details about why they closed the 23 locations beyond that the stores underperforming. States affected by this decision include Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.
