Two-time UFC champion Conor McGregor is set to join Jake Gyllenhaal in Prime Video’s new reimagining of the classic ‘80s action pic Road House.

The new take follows a former UFC fighter (Gyllenhaal) who takes a job as a bouncer at a rough-and-tumble Florida Keys bar but soon discovers that not everything is what it seems in this tropical paradise.

The exact details behind who McGregor will be playing are unknown, although the Dubliner is expected to be playing an original character and not himself.

Originally released in 1989, Road House starred Patrick Swayze as the mysterious protagonist protecting a small rural town from an evil businessman.

The movie will be directed by Doug Liman (Edge Of Tomorrow, Mr. & Mrs. Smith), produced by Joel Silver (The Matrix, Die Hard) and written by Anthony Bagarozzi (The Nice Guys).

Gyllenhaal and McGregor will be joined on screen by Billy Magnussen (No Time to Die), Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad), Gbemisola Ikumelo (A League of Their Own), Lukas Gage (The White Lotus), Hannah Love Lanier (A Black Lady Sketch Show) and Travis Van Winkle (You).

Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon Studios, had the following to say:

“Road House is a homerun for us. Not only is it a nod to fans of the original, but it is also a big, fun, broad audience movie. We are thrilled to collaborate with Joel, Doug, and this great cast led by Jake Gyllenhaal, and for them to come together to reimagine the classic MGM film as an action-packed adventure for our global audience.”

McGregor joins Gyllenhaal

“Conor McGregor is very excited to expand his storied career to Hollywood and join with Jake Gyllenhaal in this reimagining of ‘Road House,’ a beloved classic,” McGregor’s spokesperson Karen J. Kessler confirmed to ESPN said in a statement.

“While fighting remains his top focus, this is the beginning of another successful venture in the McGregor empire. He is eager to get started filming.”

The movie is set to be filmed in the Dominican Republic later this month.

Away from the octagon

McGregor, 34, and his team sold the majority of his Proper Twelve whiskey brand to Jose Cuervo in 2021 in a deal worth a reported $600 million. In 2021, McGregor was ranked by Forbes as the world’s highest-paid athlete.
