Great Britain is getting ready to coronate its new king on Saturday 6 May. The Stone of Scone, upon which British monarchs have been crowned for centuries, arrived on Saturday from its home at Edinburgh Castle. It will be used for the coronation of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey.

The King and Queen Consort will make their way there in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach from Buckingham Palace along a 1.3-mile route through London. After his coronation, Their Majesties will be carried in the Golden State Coach and the royal parade will follow the same path in reverse back to Buckingham Palace.

There are concerns that the short route, a fraction of the one Queen Elizabeth followed, will deny a chance to many who wish to view the procession and new monarch in person. To allay these concerns, there will be three giant screens placed around London, in addition to 57 others set up across the United Kingdom.

How to watch the King’s Coronation

As mentioned, if you can’t make it to London for a front row seat but find yourself in the UK you can join fellow revelers and watch the processions and coronation on one of the 60 giant screens set up across Great Britain. The whole affair will also be broadcast live on UK national television, radio and streamed online. Coverage will begin at 7:30 am local time and end at 3 pm (2:30 am to 10 am ET).

All major US broadcasters will have live coverage as well, beginning at 5 am ET. You can stream the processions and coronation through most online services.

What time will the King’s Coronation Procession begin?

Their Majesties will leave Buckingham Palace at 10:20 am local time (5:20 am ET) in what is known as ‘The King’s Procession’. The first procession will be a smaller affair with the Diamond Jubilee State Coach drawn by 6 Windsor Grey horses and accompanied by Household Cavalry providing the Sovereign’s Escort. The Procession will take about 30 minutes to arrive at Westminster Abbey.

The actual coronation ceremony will go from 11 am until 1 pm (6 am to 8 am ET). Upon the conclusion of the ceremony, King Charles III and Camila will return to Buckingham Palace in what is called ‘The Coronation Procession’, following the same route which will again take roughly 30 minutes to complete.

The Gold State Coach will be drawn by 8 Windsor Grey horses. The second Procession will be much larger, featuring members of the Armed Forces from the UK, the Commonwealth and the British Overseas Territories. The escort will also include the Sovereign’s Bodyguard and Royal Watermen.

What is the King’s Coronation procession route?

The King’s Procession will travel along The Mall after leaving Buckingham Palace. Then it will travel through Admiralty Arch, passing to the south of the King Charles Island statue in Trafalgar Square before turning onto Whitehall.

From there it will continue down Whitehall and along the east and south sides of Parliament Square, arriving at Westminster Abbey. The return route is the same but in reverse.
