Health officials are investigating a multistate salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers that has already sickened scores. Here’s what to know.

A total of 68 people across the United States have been sickened by a multistate salmonella outbreak, 18 of which have required hospitalization. Federal health officials at the CDC and FDA as well as at the state and local level are investigating the infections believed to be linked to American/slicer cucumbers grown by Agrotato, S.A. de C.V. in Sonora, Mexico and sold by 3 companies in the US.

Distribution of the cucumbers has been confirmed in 36 states but officials warn that the “product could have been distributed further, reaching additional states.” People are urged not to serve or consume the recalled cucumbers, nor products such as salads and wraps that may contain them.

Consumers that have recalled products are advised to throw them away as well as clean and sanitize any surfaces that they have touched.

If you bought whole, fresh American/slicer cucumbers on or after October 12, 2024, and can’t tell where they are from, ask your purchase location if they are part of the recall or throw them away,” recommends the FDA.

What is Salmonella?

Salmonella are bacteria which may cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, but for most people they recover after four to seven days without treatment. At higher risk are young children under 5 years, frail or elderly people over age 65, and others with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms normally start after six hours to six days of ingesting food or liquids contaminated with the organism. However, in some people signs of illness may not appear several weeks after infection.

Those infected often experience fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea, which may be bloody.
